May Day Flowers

May Day Flowers

I find the changing of the seasons continually inspiring, and so love to celebrate them as they evolve. May day flowers is an ancient tradition of gathering flowers for the first of May and gifting them to loved ones as a way to greet the new season.

Traditionally people create posies in jam jars and bottles and them hang them on neighbours doors. For the months before hand I make sure I collect all my old jars and bottles for this purpose so that I can be as sustainable as possible in my making.

In keeping with this theme I ensure I use only the seasonal flowers in my garden. I currently have tulips, spanish bluebells, blossom and some cow parsley and as always with flowers they just seem to go together perfectly!

I then gather them up into posies and tie with ribbon - my recycled ribbons look gorgeous for this! And use little tags to write 'Happy May Day' on them. If the recipient has a door handle I can hang from then I use that or if not I just leave them at the foot of the door to discover.  I always leave one at each of the houses on my street and it's just the loveliest thing to do, I'd really recommend it. It's great to do with kids, but more than anything it's just a really mindful way to spend a few moments with flowers.
